NB.1.8.1 Leads Globally; XFG Declining; New VUM PQ.16.1.1 Designated

As of late June 2026, NB.1.8.1 accounted for about 50% of globally submitted sequences (up from 35%), while XFG fell to about 17%. WHO continues to list JN.1 as a Variant of Interest and monitors NB.1.8.1, XFG, BA.3.2, and newly designated PQ.16.1.1 (July 27) as Variants Under Monitoring. No elevated severity signal has been reported.

2026–2027 COVID Vaccines Recommended to Target XFG

FDA’s VRBPAC recommended a monovalent XFG (JN.1-lineage) composition for the 2026–2027 U.S. COVID-19 vaccine formula beginning fall 2026. The European Commission has authorized an XFG-adapted Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Current 2025–2026 vaccines remain available; high-risk groups should stay up to date.

Paxlovid & Remdesivir Remain Primary Antivirals

Paxlovid remains the most widely available oral antiviral for high-risk adults and children 12+ and must be started within 5 days of symptoms. Remdesivir (Veklury) remains FDA-approved for hospitalized and high-risk outpatient use (start within 7 days). Check eligibility and drug interactions with your provider.
